Mauro Novellas
My name is Mauro Novellas, and family tales say I was born in the winter of '86.
I call a quaint Sirocco 31 my home, a sailboat which I sail whenever I can designed by the
dearly departed
Angus S. Primrose),
wich has been braving the waves longer than I've been riding this Earth. I share this cozy space with my beloved first mate
Neu,
a lovable kitten I stumbled upon, lost and soaked, on a frosty rainy night up in the mountains.
I have a paper signed by one who used to be a king, which states that I am the Skipper Unlimited. Thanks to this one (the paper, not the King; I don't have such good contacts) I have done almost everything that has to do with ships and anything that floats in general.
I've embarked on remarkable expeditions aboard oceanographic vessels, felt the shivers watching moorings snap on tugs, deserted from rusty merchant ships with alcoholic crews, and steered giants ships more than 650 feet in length. Dive clubs, jet-ski instruction, parasailing, and day charters with strangers who've turned into lifelong friends have all been in my logbook. I've piloted solar catamarans on high-altitude lakes and the lavish yachts of Catalan high society. I've donned the captain's hat for solemn ash-scattering ceremonies at sunset and stoically weathered raucous parties with aging rockers till the crack of dawn. I've hauled 300-pound tunas from the water and rescued refugees who barely weighed in at 100 pounds.
I've had a big idea brewing for years now,
Buy me a beer, and I'll fill you in.
Experience
Dockmaster and Travel Lift operator
I currently work at
PTW Shipyard
and previously at
Barcelona Nautic Center
managing boat dry docking and organizing the 15,000m2 technical area of the shipyard. I operated the Travel Lifts, a 300-ton
GH
and a 180-ton
Eden Technology
)
as well as a 80 tons
BoatLift
self-propelled trailer
, which we used to optimize dry dock space.
Merchant navy
I've embarked on many voyages, almost all with mixed crews and under foreign flags, primarily on Ro-Ro ships. I started as a deckhand, standing watch and manning the helm, eventually ending up as a Storekeeper.
Oceanographic vessels
The most enriching experiences have been aboard oceanographic vessels like the
B/O García del Cid,
B/O Investigador
or with
Azti,
where both the crew and the teams of scientists captured pieces of my heart.
Yachts and charter
From luxurious yachts with clients who have you sign confidentiality agreements, to parties on sailboats where those very clients invite you to kick back with them, sunbathing while anchored in a secluded cove.
Tugs
I learned a lot during my time on tugboats, having worked both with
Grupo Rebarsa,
and
SAR Remolcadores
I truly enjoyed my time there, but the yearning to sail overcame job stability, and I eventually cast off towards other projects.
Others
There are few captains on wind-solar catamarans on high mountain lakes, and I've had the pleasure of being one of them. Parasailing, jet ski instructor... if it exists, I've probably done it.
